Best Tattoo Artists In Idaho – Owner and founder of McNabb’s Tattoo & Fine Art, Paul Mcnabb was a tattoo artist for almost ten years of his life. Interested in art and shading from an early age, Paul was first introduced to the world of tattooing by his older brother, Shaun.

Paul dabbled in tattooing from time to time until he was in jail. While in prison, Paul began to take tattoos and art seriously. He was committed to changing his life in a positive way and made an effort to develop his art. When Paul was finally released, he wasted no time in pursuing his dreams.

Paul is very proud of the legacy he is building for his family; his store has won the Best of Boise award multiple times in Boise Weekly and other prominent local publications. Never forgetting where he comes from, he always strives to give back to the community whenever possible.

The old-school notion that people with tattoos were thugs, bad guys or sailors is a thing of the past, but Tyler Andrews, who worked as a tattoo artist for 15 years, said those vibes still linger in his profession.

“They feel like most tattoo artists are uneducated,” said Andrews, owner of Hidden Crow Tattoo. “They weren’t really the popular kids. I met amazing people that I had never met in my life. I liked this atmosphere, this feeling: the lifestyle of tattoo artists.”

Andrews is one of 170 local and traveling tattoo artists participating in the 208th Tattoo Fest at Expo Idaho.

His style of tattoo design is broad and includes realistic portraits of clients’ pets, detailed caricatures, and dark but beautiful illustrations.

“Any time I use something darker and more sinister but then have a good twist, it’s so cool,” Andrews said. “Besides, people love it. They say, ‘It’s so beautiful but dark in a way.

208 Tattoo Fest attendees can watch artists create tattoos live on location, or even get in on the action – appointments will be available.

This is a three-day event: 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. m., Friday, July 15; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday, July 16; and from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m., Sunday, July 17. One-day tickets are $13 or $39 for three days. Tickets are available on the website:

“I really love tattoo art,” said Joshua Carlton. “I’ve been in the industry for over 30 years and loved it as soon as I discovered it. This festival brings together artists who share the same love and passion.”

Many artists will do great live tattoos, some taking over 10 hours. One of the performers, Chris Jansen, injured a client’s entire back last year during the three days. This year, Andrews tattoos a ship lost at sea on his girlfriend’s leg for two days.

“It will be like an old Renaissance painting and I want to try to incorporate traditional tattoo elements with traditional flowers,” Andrews said. “Every time I do a show, I try to dabble in all styles of tattooing, whether realistic or traditional.”

“It’s super strong,” he said. “People are trying to talk to you while you’re trying to do this two-day piece. They’re trying to talk to the person while they’re in pain and they’re hating life, they’re trying to get over that tattoo to get it over with.” Of the art, Andrews said, “and to show, you see this what i mean? You have to show it.”

The tattoos will be judged in competitions throughout the festival, including Best Realistic Tattoo, Best Traditional Tattoo, and Best in Show. Andrews has judged several similar competitions on various shows and is always impressed with the creativity and technique of the performers.

“It really comes down to saturation, stiffness, composition and how it has looked over the years,” Andrews said. “We’re not here for a big tattoo. It’s not about the quality of the artwork. It’s about how permanent that tattoo is and how long it lasts for years.”

To ensure fairness, judges for the 208 Tattoo Fest will be randomly selected on the day and only tattoo artists who are not participating in the contest may be chosen, according to co-founder Erin Smith.

This can be challenging, yet rewarding, for artists and judges, but also for people getting tattoos. For people considering getting a tattoo for the first time at 208 Tattoo Fest, Joshua Carlton has some advice: Eat before you go, stay hydrated, and find an artist who does the work you love.

“Micromanagement doesn’t work well,” he said. “You’ll be ready to get the best piece if the artist does something he loves.”

Naturally, I was curious and asked if any tattoo artists from Idaho had ever been on the show, and sure enough there had been! Well, there were only 1.5, but still good to know and have local representation on the national stage.

I said 1.5 earlier because Christian isn’t technically from Idaho, but Idaho Falls is where he did a formal internship to start his career! Christian appeared in Season 12 and I loved seeing him take on some of the show’s best, as Season 12 also brought back some veteran performers from past seasons. He penetrated as deeply as possible into the competition by being one of the three finalists!

He does some of the most realistic portraits I have ever seen.
