Best Schools For Computer Engineering In California – Most computer science students do so for one simple reason: to prepare for a career in computer science. Deciding where to apply and where to register is crucial at the start of such a career. But where should you apply? How important is the decision?

Many students and parents rely on computer rankings to help them decide which schools to apply to. Some influential classifications, such as US News & World Report, introduce a kind of “collective consciousness” upon admission. People often assume that “good schools” are at the top, and conversely, that low-ranking schools cannot be “good schools.” This assumption is false, especially when rankings are based on factors that are irrelevant to applicants or parents.

The companies that provide the PC rankings vary in their transparency with their methodology, but the tops have one thing in common: none of them are based on real-world performance. For example, ÚS Nijs uses one metric: a survey of educational professionals working in universities, asking them to evaluate other universities. Other rankings, such as the Times Higher Education Computer Science Rankings and the QS Computer Science Rankings, include employer reputation metrics in addition to academic quality metrics. This reinforces “common sense” about which institutions are “good schools” for computers. Because no other metric uses actual employment outcomes, the misconceptions are compounded year after year. Also, none of the available rankings include liberal arts colleges for computer science.

That is why we are trying to achieve our computer science ranking. Our goal was to rank schools based on relevant and reliable data. Our rankings are based on two factors: placement in high-paying tech jobs and starting salary for graduates. All computer science degree-granting schools were eligible for our rankings, and our rankings include private universities, public universities, online and liberal arts colleges (including the best computer science colleges for women). Our first ranking only covers colleges and universities in the United States, but we also provide basic information about schools in Canada.

The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) is maintained by the United States Department of Education and contains a wealth of information on undergraduate enrollment, demographics, course offerings, school resources, degrees awarded, and more. We collected data on more than 250 schools, starting with a set of schools that awarded at least five degrees in computer science in 2016—the most recent year for which data were available.

LinkedIn is a professional networking site. “Recruiter” is LinkedIn’s premium product that allows for highly specific searches. As the name suggests, the purpose of professional recruiters is to find candidates with specific qualifications and experience. We could use it for another purpose: find out which college graduates are better represented in the software industry. Search parameters can be found below under “notes”.

PayScale is a website that collects and presents salary data for various industries. Last year, PayScale partnered with the US. News and World Report to provide early and mid-year salary data for university graduates in various disciplines. PayScale claims to have surveyed millions of users, but we’re not sure how reliable the data is, especially for schools with small sample sizes. However, we find that the PayScale data is sensitive and, even if not a great indicator of absolute salary expectations due to self-selection bias, it is an excellent indicator of the relative performance of graduates in the labor market.

The computer science rankings have two components: relative employment and average starting salary. In each case, scores were normalized to 1 for the highest score and 0 for the lowest score. The final weighted mean was then normalized to 1 to obtain the Computer Science Employment Index™ (CSEI).

Relative Employment (50%) = Number of LinkedIn users who graduated from 2012-2017 and reported IT-related positions at top companies, divided by the number of [computer science degrees awarded by the school from 2013-2016.

Median Starting Salary (50%) = PayScale’s reported median starting salary for IT. When computer engineering data were available, we calculated a weighted average of the computer science and computer engineering PayScale figures based on the number of degrees offered.

These institutions awarded more than 1,500 computer science and computer engineering degrees between 2013 and 2016, according to the U.S. government. Not all are equally represented among high-paying tech companies. Among them, Western Governors University, a not-for-profit online university, was the worst performer. George Mason University in Virginia, the University of North Carolina-Charlotte and the University of Central Florida, all public schools that are not flagships, also graduate many students who do not land at big tech companies. Indiana University-Bloomington, the state’s flagship school, also underperforms, especially compared to in-state rival Purdue.

UT Austin is ahead of UT Dallas, sending about the same number of graduates into high-paying tech jobs but awarding fewer degrees. Stanford and the University of Washington-Seattle, schools located in tech hubs (Stanford is in Silicon Valley and Seattle is home to Microsoft and Amazon), have some of the best job prospects in terms of placement.

The ratio is a reference when comparing institutions; does not represent the proportion of graduates in high-paying technical jobs, as the data are for different date ranges (degree data 2013-2016 and graduate employment data 2012-2017). The search parameters also do not include all high-paying technical jobs, but are intended to be a representative sample.

The 18 schools listed here returned over 1,000 results using our LinkedIn search parameters. If LinkedIn’s results are representative, graduates from these 18 schools make up about 40% of all people in high-paying tech jobs. (66,628 total search results vs. 26,521 cumulative search results for these 18). The University of California-Berkeley, located near Silicon Valley, has the highest number of employees in high-paying tech jobs relative to the number of graduates.

Computer science is one of the few major businesses that make paying full price for college a fiscally sound investment. Not surprisingly, most of the schools with the highest starting salary graduates in computer science are also very expensive, paying over $60,000 a year. One school whose graduates earn good starting salaries, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is relatively more affordable. (Note that the price is not the total cost of attendance; it only includes tuition, required fees, room and board. We recommend adding $5,000 to $10,000 to estimate the total cost of attendance.)

The results of the analysis were surprising. People think of “ranking” as linear: going from 1 to 10 is the same as going from 20 to 30 or from 40 to 50. Our rankings are anything but:

The best schools have a huge employment advantage. When we plotted CSEI against the range, we saw a rapid decline in job prospects in the top 40, a plateau from 40 to 60, and then a steady decline. The top 40 schools are labeled here so you can see how they compare to each other and the schools under 40.

The CS Employment Top 40 includes a variety of school types. Just over half (21) are private universities (Caltech, Stanford, Duke, Carnegie Mellon, Dartmouth, UPenn, Princeton, MIT, Cornell, USC, Yale, Columbia, Brown, Rice, Santa Clara, Northwestern, Seattle University, Harvard , WPI, RPI, and Tufts); there are also public schools (Berkeley, University of Washington, UCLA, Georgia Tech, UCSD, UT-Austin, UC-Davis, Cal Poly, UIUC, San Jose State, University of Florida, Penn State, Michigan, UVA, and Texas AM ); co-ed liberal arts (Harvey Mudd and Pomona) and women’s liberal arts (Wellesley and Mount Holyoke).

The top 20 schools award at most 15% of all computer science degrees in the US, but if our LinkedIn data is representative, their graduates earn about 30% of all high-paying tech jobs. Graduates from these top 20 schools also earn significantly more money:

The average (unweighted) reported median starting salary for the top 10 schools was $92,748. The top 20 averaged over $90,000. The median starting salary for the CS Employment Top 40 was $83,802. 41-60 for the schools listed above, the median starting salary was $71,721, down more than $12,000. For schools ranked 81-120, it was even lower at $65,935. (We should note that this is still higher than the US median income.)
