Nestled in the Coachella Valley, against the backdrop of the breathtaking San Jacinto Mountains, is the desert town of Rancho Mirage, California. During my recent stay in the Palm Springs area, I was lucky enough to stay at the Westin Mission Hills Resort & Villas, writes Andrew Forbes.
This desert city is known for hosting stage and film stars and world leaders. Sunnylands Annenberg Estate’s famed Rancho Mirage Historic Site has been the destination of choice for celebrities and world leaders for decades, including eight US presidents and Queen Elizabeth II.

Today, Rancho Mirage retains its status as a sophisticated retreat, and I took refuge in this wilderness at the Westin Mission Hills Resort and Villas. (I stayed at its sister resort – you can read our Westin Desert Villas profile here).
The Westin Mission Hills Resort is a little different because the entire resort consists of multiple properties that work together to create a premier vacation experience. There is a hotel on site with concierge services; Full Spa: Championship Golf Courses; restaurants; and well-appointed Westin Mission Hills Villas.
Guests of these elegant villa apartments have access to heated pools, water slides, jacuzzis, as well as tennis and basketball courts.
For adults, there are activities such as an adults-only pool area, sauna, and horseback riding and biking, and jogging trails. The resort has a spa and wellness center that specializes in unique honey treatments such as massages and scrubs using honey from desert beehives.

Here I enjoyed Executive Chef Joel Delmond’s Italian inspired cuisine – and the service was spot on! The style is sophisticated, but very charming in the desert with a Southern California flair.
This is one resort you really don’t want to leave. Of course, all the cultural, historical and recreational attractions of the Palm Springs area are on the doorstep.
