Tulum is not a big place. So, wherever you choose to stay, you’ll always be close to the action. Tulum mainly consists of a small town (or “pueblo”) located 3 kilometers from the coast. The city is connected to the coast by the Avenida Copa (Route 109), which is connected to the coastal access road (Route 15) that runs parallel to the playa.

When considering the best places to visit in Tulum, there is only one question you need to decide:

Tulum is a recommended place to stay for budget travelers, long-term visitors or party people who prefer proximity to bars and nightlife. If you’re on vacation and can’t afford it, the beach area offers an unforgettable experience in Tulum. You go to Tulum for its amazing beaches!

How To Decide Where To Stay In Tulum, Mexico

Now, although the beach and the city are similar, there are some differences in each area, so in the following sections we will look at where to stay in Tulum Beach and where to stay in Tulum.

Tulum has only one beautiful beach that is 10 kilometers long. Tulum Beach is located north of the Mayan ruins of Tulum National Park, and south of the entrance to the Sian Khan National Biosphere Reserve.

The Tulum Beach area can be roughly divided into three areas, North, Central and South. The North Beach area is my favorite as it is close to the Tulum ruins and has public parking. But the central and southern coastal areas have more shops and restaurants.

Many travelers choose to stay in Tulum to save money. It’s usually my go-to when I visit because you’re not far from the beach in Tulum – and you can always take a taxi, bike or walk to the playa. Additionally, the city is a great place to visit on day trips from Tulum.

The town of “O Pueblo” offers everything from high-end boutique hotels to budget hotels and hostels with many great bars and restaurants and great pools. There is also a distinctly named part of the city called Altea Jama, a thriving residential area with luxury condominiums, high-end Airbnbs and a few luxury hotels.

Having an airport makes Cancun a great choice for travelers staying for just a few days or a long weekend. It is often a favorite destination for families and groups. Tulum offers the most beautiful beaches and the opportunity to experience Mayan ruins.

We recommend staying at least 3 days in Tulum, which will give you enough time to visit the Mayan ruins and enjoy the beaches. For this reason, many travelers stay longer in Tulum, Mexico.

Tulum does not currently have an airport, but Tulum International Airport began construction in 2021 and is expected to be completed in 2023. Meanwhile, the closest airport to Tulum is Cancun International Airport. Check out our article on getting from Cancun to Tulum.

Tulum has some great spots for kite flying and windsurfing on the main beach. However, traditional surfers are likely to be disappointed as most of the breaks in Tulum are chest deep.
