Great Cosy Hotels, B&bs And Pubs With Rooms For Winter

This is one of the most underrated places in the UK. I wouldn’t say it’s a hidden gem, as places like Ludlow and Ironbridge are well known, but it was the village that really surprised me. It is absolutely stunning here (I hope my photos in this post show it!)

During my last stay in the UK I went on a hunt to find the best places to stay in Shropshire, and of course I fell in love with the place.

The view from Stiperstones St is enough to do it, but add in little towns like Stratton Church and the history of Ludlow Castle, and I’m completely sold.

Also if you are a foodie like me then there are lots of fantastic cafes, food markets and restaurants to explore. This place is really famous for food for a reason!

Very Best Things To Do In Shrewsbury, England

I’ve always loved places that have a great mix of culture, history, outdoor activities, and of course, great food. Well, Shropshire has all that and more.

If you’re planning a trip here, this blog post is full of the best things to do in Shropshire. I promise you will have an amazing time here, so read on!

Shropshire is in the center of England, between the city of Birmingham and the Welsh border. You can see it on the map here.

At around 1,500 square miles, Shropshire is one of the least populated areas in the UK, but it does offer some interesting places and locations.

Luxury Accommodation In Shropshire

The area is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ironbridge and the Shropshire Hills (which makes up a quarter of the area).

We drove from London to Shrewsbury (the capital of Shropshire) in less than three hours, which I thought was pretty good.

Around two hours from Bristol and Manchester, and just one hour from Birmingham, it makes it very accessible.

If you take the train from London, you go through Crewe and it only takes three hours.

Hotels In Shropshire Holidays At Cool Places

If you’re looking for a few different days out in Shropshire, I’ve broken them down into three areas: Shrewsbury, Ludlow and Iron Bridge.

Basically, you can use this guide to get around Ludlow, or you can choose some of the best places to visit in Shropshire for a longer trip. Hopefully this will give you a pretty good idea of what you can do in Shropshire.

Built on original medieval plans, walking through the city is like stepping into a different era. There is a castle (of course), but I love all the old Tudor buildings scattered around. More than 660 buildings are listed here, and they really add character to the city.

When you look at a map of Shrewsbury, it almost looks like an island with the River Severn circling the town.

Best Hotels In Shropshire

As such, one of the best ways to see Shrewsbury is from the water. We rented a canoe with Hire A Canoe (everything was actually in his name) and went for a gentle paddle on the river.

We passed places like Quarry Gardens (the main park in Shrewsbury) and the Charles Darwin monument. Darwin was born and raised in Shrewsbury, so it’s great to see a monument in his honour.

There are several different tours to choose from with Hire A Canoe. Most are two-hour self-guided tours, but there are also six-hour epic tours. I wish we had time for that.

It’s cheap too, just £30 per person for everything (including transport). This is a really special way to see Shrewsbury!

Our canoe trip ended at Quarry Gardens. From there, we went to The Boathouse Inn, one of the best restaurants in Shrewsbury overlooking the River Severn.

We were lucky enough to get a table on the deck right by the water, and it’s a great spot.

I will say something about this place. Be sure to bring your appetite as the portion sizes are huge (which is definitely a good thing!)

Until the Governors started raiding in 1069, they thought “stop, we need a castle here”, so the castle was built the following year in 1070. I tell you, Shropshire has some serious history!

Epic Things To Do In Shropshire

Entry to the castle grounds is free (it’s a wonderful place for lunch), but you can also get tickets to the Shropshire Regime Museum inside the castle.

One of the award-winning exhibits is the German Admiral Doenitz’s staff, captured by soldiers of the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry at the end of World War II. Doenitz had been nominated as Hitler’s successor, so he was very artistic.

This building may look like any other factory, but it is considered the grandfather of skyscrapers.

Built in 1797, it was the first building in the world to use a solid iron frame structure. The plan to use this steel frame structure essentially continued to create the modern skyscrapers we see today.

Derelict for years, Flaxmill Maltings is being lovingly restored by Historic England with a new multi-million dollar renovation.

Opening in spring 2022, the new Flaxmill Maltings will be a historic museum of the past. There will also be a new office, cafeteria and observation deck on the Jubilee Tower. We looked up to the top of the Jubilee Tower and the views were amazing!

This is one of the things I love about Shropshire, even a simple pub can serve great food.

The Loopy Shrew is a multi-room family restaurant and bar in the heart of Shrewsbury.

The Loopy Shrew serves modern British cuisine using local producers, and is a great place to eat.

I had the wild garlic velvet pork belly, potato rosti, wilted spinach, sautéed baby broccoli and pancetta crumbles. It was honestly some of the best pork belly I’ve had in a long time!

Love2Stay is often referred to as Shropshire’s Central Park. It’s a cross between an RV park, a luxury safari lodge (each individually heated, of course), and an adventure park all rolled into one.

Facilities include an adventure park for children, assault courses for adults, a small lake where you can swim, and an outdoor pool. There is also a Syndrome where you can watch a movie, or you can relax in one of the tents.

Hotels Near Ludlow

Obviously we weren’t a caravan, so we stayed in one of the luxury safari tents. It is very spacious – you can easily sleep a family of six in one tent. They come with their own dining area, living room, and kitchen, so everything you need for an independent vacation.

Outside, each tent has its own heater and BBQ grill. We ate in Shrewsbury that night, but wish we had food for the barbecue. Our neighbor was making one and it smelled great!

Here are some of the best places to visit near Ludlow. We drove from Shrewsbury to Ludlow in the morning, so if you want the best start to the day, head to the Long Mynd.
