Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational and Wage Statistics Program, we found the highest-paying occupations in 2021 in each state. Perhaps, new information is available. For our calculations, we decided to work with at least 1,000 people in a state for which the BLS reported an annual median wage. This means that there will be better paying jobs in the country, but there will be fewer workers.

The table above shows the highest paying jobs according to our review. Hover over each state and DC to see the highest paying jobs and average annual salaries. We also include in the report the number of employees in each occupation.

A medical career is a very high paying job. For example, the occupation category “physicians, all” is the highest paying occupation in 23 countries, including occupations employing at least 1,000 people. This includes Maine, which has a median annual salary of $237,090, and Wisconsin, which has a median annual salary of $296,600.
