The name refers to a stream that used to flow from the East River into what is now Astoria; today, a rotating selection of beers ($5-$9) from domestic and international breweries pressed through 25 taps. Get some samples from the bartenders before you commit, then go to a high table. Weekday happy hours (3-7 p.m.) are a chance to try great beers with various discounts, while monthly events showcase serious American hops.

Queens—a brewery that was a hotbed for German immigrants before the Prohibition era—rejuvenates its dark past with this 5,000-square-foot microbrewery and tasting room. Owner Rich Buceta, who cut his teeth at the Greenpoint brewery, produces souped-up versions of classic styles like Double Umlaut Lagrrr!, a German bock aged in old Jamaican rum barrels. Other offerings include the Lush Imperial Full Stack IPA and 19-33 Lagrrr!, an aggressively hopped Pilsner. Enjoy Stein’s 25-seat tasting room, beautifully appointed with mahogany walls, red oak communal tables and hanging metal lamps. Once you have your fill, grab your favorite brew to pop the potato. A live performance stage adjacent to the tasting room will soon feature live performances reflecting Buceta’s passion for music (the brewery’s name refers to the neck part of the guitar).

Haunt Astoria is billed as “your friendly cocktail bar,” but it’s actually more than that. It doubles as a rustic and relaxed dining and breakfast spot and a lively moonlit bar where gaming enthusiasts gather to play your childhood classics like Guess Who?, Uno and Scrabble. The venue is also known for hosting free reverse movie nights in the courtyard (recent films include The Breakfast Club and The Mask).

Young professionals join the artistic crowd at this neighborhood cocktail bar. Quaffs include twists on the classics: a whiskey sour made with saffron simple syrup, while organic blueberry juice and lavender go into the mojito. Behind the 12-seat bar are ten drafts — including Astoria Singlecut 19-33 — and 15 bottles (Angry Orchard, Breckenridge IPA). On the menu you will find pork tacos and herb lamb ribs and veggie burgers that set the mood.
