The Loire Valley, known as the Garden of France, is only two hours from Paris. It is known for its beautiful chateaux, vineyards and beautiful countryside. Indeed, this valley is one of the most visited places in France.

After the Hundred Years’ War, many of the buildings built in the border were renovated into luxury residences. During the Renaissance, it became a favorite of the Court and luxury palaces were commissioned by the Kings of France.

Today, some chateaux are privately owned and converted into hotels. You can stay in some of them for one night and feel like a king!

The Loire Valley is more than 280 kilometers (170 miles) long, so choosing a place to stay is no easy task. This is why I have created this guide, where you can find the best chateaux hotels in the Loire Valley, as well as the best cities to stay in the area.

France Tastic! Things To Do In The Loire Valley Region Of France

When I was traveling without a car, I chose to stay in two places so that I could easily reach the most famous palaces—the cities of Tour and Blois. Both can be reached by TGV train directly to Paris.

In this way, I was able to visit the chateaux de Chambord, Chaumont and d’Amboise from Blois and Chenonceau from Tours. And I didn’t miss the Amazing Sound & Light Show, which takes place at Château Royal de Blois at night.

While in Blois, I stayed at the Hotel Mercure Blois Center – a beautiful hotel with an indoor pool and a great location, a short distance from the Old Town.

In Tours, I rented La Maison Jules – a central B&B, located in a historic building with a garden (+ amazing breakfast).

Best Chateaux In Loire Valley (my Top List + Map 2022)

Are you looking for a central place to stay to explore the most famous chateaux in the Loire? The most popular cities and hotels are:

The Loire Valley is not just a place, it is an area along the Loire River and is more than 280 kilometers (170 miles) long. So, before deciding where to park, there are a few things to consider:

This is one of the most important things you should do before choosing a place to live. The Loire Valley has more than 300 chateaux, of which 20 are the most popular among tourists. These famous palaces are located between the cities of Angers and Orléans. However, this is still a long distance (more than 2 hours 30 minutes by car between Angers and Orléans). So, you have to slow down.

If it’s your first time in the Loire, I recommend you start with Château de Chambord and Château de Chenonceau. Both are worth seeing. Château de Blois, Château de Chaumont, Château d’Amboise and Château de Villandry are also worth visiting if you have time. All the chateaux mentioned are in the area between Tours and Blois.

Therefore, to visit the most famous castles stay in the eastern part of the Loire Valley (between Tours and Blois). However, if you want to visit other places in the west, I recommend that you stay in zone 2. This will save you a lot of travel time.

This is another important point that you need to make before accepting a place to stay. Most of the chateaux can be reached by car. Fortunately, you can reach the most famous ones (Château de Chambord and Chenonceau) using public transport. However, depending on where you live you may need to take a train (or two) and then a bus.

Also, keep in mind that the chateau buses usually only run during the summer months. This means that if you are traveling outside the peak season, these villas are only accessible by car.

So, my advice is that when you choose the palaces you want to visit, check how you can get to each of them. Sometimes, it can take a while to get to the chateau (from the bottom), especially if you are traveling by bus.

Luxury Paris, Normandy, & Loire Valley Tour

Most of the chateau hotels are outside the cities. And in this case, you will need to rent a car to get there easily. Therefore, it is possible to find a choice for everyone. However, you will waste a lot of time moving from one place to another.

So, if you want to stay in a chateau, I would highly recommend a car. Also, keep in mind that food options will be limited unless you want to drive to a nearby town.

Living in any city in the Loire Valley has two advantages – good access to public transport and plenty of restaurants. The first cities that people stop at when visiting the valley are Tours, Amboise and Blois. Also, there is a TGV train from Paris to Blois and Tours (a journey of less than two hours).

My best advice is – book your place in advance. It is a very popular place, especially throughout the summer months.

Best Hotels In The Loire Valley

While researching my travel plans I came across recommendations to stay in Saumur, Chinon, Langeais and Azay-le-Rideau. These towns can be beautiful, but they are far from famous castles (for example, it is 30 minutes and 2 hours to Château de Chambord).

This is not easy for beginners. If you decide to stay in one of these cities, choose the second base, where you can visit the famous chateaux in the east.

Without a doubt, traveling by car is the easiest way to see the Loire Valley. You will have the opportunity to see the chateaux at your own pace, without having to follow a strict schedule and worry about missing a train.

The best places to stay in the Loire Valley by car are Amboise and Blois. Both towns are centrally located and are a great base for exploring the Loire’s important castles. They are a little friendlier than Tours and have a classic French charm that will make you fall in love with them!

Amboise is smaller but offers more unique accommodation than Blois. On the other hand, Blois has old buildings and beautiful wooden houses. Also, there you will find other things to do (Cathedral of Saint-Louis, Jardins de l’Évêché, Ile Magic), without looking at the chateau.

Amboise is the perfect city to use as a base for visiting the Loire Valley. The famous Chateaux Chenonceau and Chambord are less than an hour away. Apart from this, the city has its castles – Château d’Amboise and Château du Clos Lucé. The latter is famous for being Leonardo Da Vinci’s last home.

The hotel is located in an old building, surrounded by a beautiful garden with a heated pool. The location is great, just a short walk from the chateau, with lots of restaurants and bakeries nearby (try
