Can Credit Unions Win?
Global Credit Union began in 1954 as Fairchild Federal Credit Union. As a way to meet the financial needs of military and civilian employees at Fairchild Air Force Base, our founder Mary Milla dreamed of a grassroots credit union. Mira was a secretary at Fairchild Air Force Base when she held an informal meeting in her kitchen with some officials to form a credit union.
Approved by the Federal Credit Union Bureau, this organization was established with a starting capital of $284. By the end of the first year, Fairchild Federal Credit Union’s assets had grown to $39,177. This represents the savings of 647 members. By 1959, the credit union had more than $2.5 million in assets.
After submitting the required documents to the Department of Defense, the credit union will select from 12 qualified applicants to establish a branch at a US military installation overseas. In May 1969, the first overseas branch was established at Aviano Air Base in Italy. Later that year, a second branch was opened at Camp Edel in Vicenza and a third at Camp Darby in Tyrenia the following year. In 1977, a fourth Italian branch was established in San Vito.
Originally based in a World War II building used as an X-ray lab in the 1940s, the credit union moved its headquarters from Fairchild Air Force Base to downtown Spokane in 1976 while maintaining a branch in Fairchild.
Credit Unions Expect Hybrid Work Model After Covid Ends
In May 1982, the Board of Directors approved a Ministry of Defense request to provide credit union services to Ministry of Defense personnel stationed in Incirlik and Izmir, Turkey. Two more offices opened earlier in the year in Athens, Greece and Heraklion, Crete. Those offices, along with two in Turkey, were closed later that year as the government cut military spending. However, in May 1987, a branch of the Air Force Missile Facility was opened in Comiso, Sicily.
The credit union opened its first operational facilities in 1985 at branches at Spokane and Fairchild Air Force Bases. The following year, the credit union opened a Tydeman Supermarket store, the first on the West Coast. Providing more innovative and convenient products and services to members has always been a priority for credit unions.
In 1988, the board of directors voted to change the credit union’s name to better reflect its diverse membership and increase growth potential. A competition was held among members to send three selected entries to the National Credit Union Administration for approval. Fairchild Federal Credit Union officially became a worldwide federal credit union on April 1, 1989.
From 1990 to 1998, six additional branches were opened, four in Idaho, one in Spokane Valley, and one on the Gonzaga University campus. In 1996, the credit union was named the Air Force Credit Union of the Year, and they will replicate that honor in the military in 2004.
Spokane City Credit Union
In 1997, Global Federal Credit Union dropped the “Federal” from its name and changed to a government-chartered credit union. In 1998, the board applied for and received a community charter that would allow the credit union to serve anyone who lives or works in Spokane County. Global was awarded a multi-county community charter in Idaho in 2000 and a statewide community charter in Washington State in 2002. The first location to benefit from this statewide charter was the Tri-Cities, where a York grocery store branch opened in 2003 in Pasco and Kennewick, Washington.
In 2004, Global Credit Union, building on its reputation as a premier source of commercial banking business, opened its highly anticipated full-service Membership Commercial Services Center on Riverside Drive in the heart of Spokane’s Financial District.
In 2013, Global Credit Union launched a new logo and branding campaign to celebrate the people, artists and businesses that make their communities great. The initiative, Global Citizenship Strategy, engages members and like-minded people by supporting the arts, music, small business and military service, and reflects the credit union’s long tradition of community involvement, military history and entrepreneurship. Credit unions do this through the people they care about – members, employees and volunteers. People help people who do what they love – not because it makes them rich, but because it makes their lives richer.
ITM is an Interactive Teller Machine. They allow members to connect with live tellers who are able to assist with almost every transaction in a traditional branch environment. ITM can also be used as an ATM, 24/7. Global continues its tradition of continuous service improvement by expanding ITM inside and outside the branch, providing members with a diverse experience.

Continuing to grow, Universal created a new branch concept: the In-Store Member Service Center (ISMSC). Two new ISMSCs opened in 2019 and 2020. The Global29th ISMSC, which opened in 2019 at the Safeway grocery store on 29th Avenue, brings the latest technology to Spokane’s South Hills community. In 2020, GlobalSouthValley ISMSC opened in an Albertsons grocery store near South Spokane Valley. Equipped with ITM machines, the service center also has a dedicated member advisory staff to help busy shoppers make the most of their time and money.
Today, total credit union assets worldwide exceed $500 million. Approximately 190 dedicated professionals serve over 50,000 Global members. Today, three full-service branches operate at US military facilities in Italy, with 12 additional branches in Washington and Idaho.
Global Credit Union is now one of the largest credit unions in the Pacific Northwest and a recognized leader in the communities it serves.
