Three Nevada companies have been named the 2020 Best Workplaces by Size in a state employee survey.

The Review-Journal and the Las Vegas Business Press partnered with Philadelphia-based Energage to create the rankings. The companies worked together in 2014 to create similar rankings for Las Vegas.

Helix Electric won in the 500 or more employees category. Encompass Health — Home Health Hospice won in the 150 to 499 category. Steelhead Productions won in the under 150 employee category.

Research was done before covid-19, but the three companies and others recognized in the process are best equipped to deal with the dynamics of the pandemic.

The process began in October 2019, when News & Promotions welcomed people to nominate companies for Best Workplaces, said Bob Helbig, director of media partnerships at Energage, formerly known as Workplace Dynamics.

Energage also reached out to local businesses, and during the process, 755 Nevada employers were invited to have their employees participate in the survey. All organizations are eligible to participate, as long as they have at least 35 employees, Helbig said. Employers can be public, private, non-profit or governmental. There was no cost to enter the program.

Companies that are among the best places to work in Nevada can survive COVID because they respect their employees and value what their workers do. Employees in top jobs tend to be motivated by a higher purpose and understand the direction of the company, he said.

“In the covid environment we’re in, there are a lot of companies that want to be recognized for what they do for their employees and customers,” Helbig said. “Companies have to do extraordinary things to meet the demands of their employees and to meet the demands of their customers. They renew themselves.

“Companies that have a really strong culture of two-way communication will do much better to survive all this madness. It’s one thing for management to communicate X, Y and Z and inform employees about what’s going on. But it’s just as important that it’s there. good communication from the bottom up so leaders know what’s happening on the front lines. What are employees seeing and hearing and what problems are they encountering?”

Helbig said any business that struggles with communication during normal times and everyone on the same page is the most difficult when it comes to dealing with a crisis.

“We always say it all starts with good leadership,” Helbig said. “Leaders that employees trust, believe in and listen to is a big factor. Across the country, we find that feeling valued is always in the top three. When you ask employees what is most important to them, feeling valued because of what they do very. high. That’s a big difference.”

The biggest misnomer in the workplace is that people are motivated by money, Helbig said. In research, they have consistently found that wages and benefits are at the bottom.

Research conducted before COVID-19 showed that Nevada employees, compared to their national counterparts, were less likely to look for other jobs, Helbig said. In top jobs, a small percentage of people apply for other positions, he said.

All other categories were similar, with the exception that fewer employees said no when it came to their company operating on the basis of strong values. It was 82.7 percent in Nevada compared to 86 percent nationwide.

“The host is an important thing,” Helbig said. “People want to work somewhere where there are strong values ​​and ethical places and rules and where everyone understands the rules of the road. That number in Nevada is a bit of a red flag.”

Helbig said he likes the diversity of award winners in different industries. All three of these companies have been hit hard by covid-19 since the survey.

“They were all on the front lines of providing services to the public,” Helbig said. “The No. 1 companies are in very different sectors. You have a construction company, a healthcare company and an exhibition design company. I like a variety of high-quality companies across the list of 40. Not all of them are real estate companies, banks or law firms. It doesn’t matter what kind of work you do does. You can do amazing things to motivate your employees to do their best.”

The best judges for the awards are the employees who work there, Helbig said. The process is based on scientific research of employees evaluating their workplace culture. It also gives the company insight into what makes them unique.

Together, the surveyed companies employ 16,328 people in Nevada. Of the employees who received surveys, 8,787 responded, either on paper or online. For this year’s list of winners, 40 employers were recognized as Best Places to Work and ranked based on feedback from an employee survey of 56.

“Everybody on the list is a winner,” Helbig said. “It’s not like we’re handing out blue ribbons to everyone. Everyone on this list has exceeded our standards for what is considered a top workplace. There were 16 companies that didn’t make the list because the results, based on feedback from their employees, weren’t strong enough. You had to clear a pretty high bar to make this list.”

Helbig said employers that receive high enough ratings are considered the best places to work. Employers are classified by size and ranked within these size groups to accurately compare results. Energage also named special award winners based on outstanding results in specific research topics.

Helbig said if you look at the list and wonder why a particular company isn’t on it, it could be because it chose not to participate or because it didn’t score well enough in the survey process. Energage sometimes disqualifies employers based on questionable results discovered through statistical tests it conducts to ensure organizations are administering the survey correctly, he said.

Helbig said many of those 755 may not have participated because they didn’t think they would rank high.

“We would like more companies to participate, but I see this as the first year of the statewide program.”
