In 1847, the American Gregory Hanson claimed to have invented the doughnut. He was not happy with the raw grain center. If you make a hole in the middle, the dough will bake evenly and it will be much better. A “Legend” was born. Since then, small bites have become popular.

And of course they are also popular in our bakery. Our baker starts every morning at 5am (or earlier) to make delicious donuts. Every day anew. It’s also a place where you can bring a bit of France to dinner with homemade tourières, duck confit, pâtés and even duck fat. Both she and her husband studied French at Lenotre and Bellevue.

I visit Sandrine’s every Saturday from April to October after long hours of perusing the Farmer’s Market, but the real reason Sandrine’s is on my list in the Okanagan is her cake and chocolate making classes. Pasta class was added to her schedule around Christmas time.

In the afternoon, a class of 6 eager and hungry students learn how to make mocha, chocolate and caramel macarons. But my historian side got excited when Sandrine talked about the history of pasta. I didn’t know that pasta originated in Italy, and was created by cook Catherine de’ Medici in 1533. When she married the Duke of Orléans (known as Henri II), who later became King of France in 1547.
